Nonna’s Struffoli

This Italian Christmas dessert is unlike any of the cookies or cheesecakes that typically flood the dessert table at any parties you attend. These airy, honey coated dough balls are so hard to put down. They’re like french fries.. you can’t just have one!

How long does struffoli keep?

Cover struffoli in cling wrap or store in an airtight container. Struffoli will last for 3 days.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups AP flour
  • 6 eggs
  • Tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Zest of an orange
  • Zest of a lemon
  • 2 tbsps olive oil
  • 12oz bottle of honey
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • Rainbow sprinkles for decoration
  • 3 cups peanut oil for frying

Instructions

  1. To your stand mixer, add flour, eggs, baking powder, salt, olive oil, orange and lemon zest. Mix using paddle attachment until dough is mostly formed.
  2. Dump dough mixture onto a clean, lightly floured service and knead until smooth. Form a ball, lightly coat with olive oil to prevent a crust from forming and place a bowl over the dough for 20 minutes.
  3. Roll dough out flat until about 1/2 inch thick and cut into strips. Roll dough into long strips and cut dough into smaller pieces.
  4. Preheat frying oil to 350°F. Carefully place pieces in oil and fry until golden. Remove from oil and place on baking sheet lined with paper towel. Depending on the size of the pot you are frying in, this will take you a few batches (it took us 3).
  5. In a very large frying pan, heat honey and sugar over medium heat until sugar is fully dissolved and honey starts to bubble. Dump in fried dough balls and toss to coat in honey mixture. Remove from heat. Pour onto serving dish and sprinkle the sprinkles on top and enjoy!!
