Orange Creamsicle Sticky Buns

If you want a light, flavorful and … dare I say… ‘refreshing’ sticky bun, you are in the right place! This has got to be my favorite cinnamon bun/sticky bun variation we have made thus far!! The dough was so moist and fluffy from adding in a tad bit of orange juice and the icing perfectly glazed the top giving the most decadent bite.

If you want a light, flavorful and ... dare I say... 'refreshing' sticky bun, you are in the right place! This has got to be my favorite cinnamon bun/sticky bun variation we have made thus far!! The dough was so moist and fluffy from adding in a tad bit of orange juice and the icing perfectly glazed the top giving the most decadent bite.

Ingredients

  • Dough
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 5 cups flour, divided
  • 2 cups warm whole milk, 110-115°F
  • 2 1/4 tsps active dry yeast
  • 2 tsps salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • * I juiced/zested 4 oranges for this recipe. You will not use all of the juice.
  • Filling
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • Icing
  • 1 cup condensed milk
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp orange zest

Instructions

  1. Start by greasing 2 9x13 baking dishes. In a large bowl, whisk together milk, melted butter and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top, mix and allow to sit until frothy. Add 4 cups of flour and use a wooden spoon to mix into milk mixture until combined. Cover bowl with clean dish towel and allow to rise for 1 hour.
  2. Once dough is doubled in size, add salt, baking powder, ~3/4 cup to dough, orange juice and zest. Use wooden spoon to lightly mix into the dough. Flour a clean surface and pour out dough. Knead dough lightly while adding flour as needed. Once dough is no longer sticky, roll out dough into large rectangle that is about a 1/2 inch thick.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together softened butter, sugar and zest. Spread across surface of dough. Roll dough over itself to create bun form. Use a sharp knife to cut 14-16 sticky buns (cut in half and repeat to get even slices). Place sticky buns snug in prepared baking dishes. Cover with plastic wrap or clean dish towel and allow to sit for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F. Remove dish towel and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden. Meanwhile, prepare the icing by whisking together, or using a hand mixer, powdered sugar, orange zest, vanilla extract and condensed milk until smooth.
  5. Remove sticky buns from oven. Scoop icing onto buns and spread out evenly. Enjoy!
