Morning Jam Breakfast Sandwich: : A Sweet and Savory Start to Your Day

Do you like the classic bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich? Well it’s time to elevate it with a twist. You’re going to love this Morning Jam Breakfast Sandwich. Combining crispy bacon, creamy eggs, melty cheese, and a special duo of cream cheese and homemade strawberry jam, this sandwich is the ultimate sweet and savory combo that will kickstart your morning with a burst of flavor.

This recipe takes the familiar comfort of a breakfast sandwich and layers it with rich textures and bright flavors that make it truly unique. The contrast between the salty bacon and the homemade jam’s fruity sweetness is next level. Let’s break down the steps and explore how this delicious sandwich comes together.

How to Make the Perfect Morning Jam Breakfast Sandwich
Step 1: Homemade Strawberry Jam

This sandwich is all about layers of flavor, and it starts with the homemade jam. Making your own strawberry jam might sound intimidating, but it’s easier than you think! With just three ingredients—diced strawberries, sugar, and a squeeze of lemon juice—you can whip up a small batch of fresh, vibrant jam.
Here’s the key: simmer the strawberries until they break down into a luscious, thick jam. It takes about 10-12 minutes on the stovetop, and the result is so much better than store-bought. Plus, you can store any leftovers in the fridge and use it for toast or more breakfast sandwiches throughout the week.

Step 2: Prepping Your Bread

I recommend using sourdough for this sandwich because it adds a lovely tang that pairs beautifully with the sweetness of the jam. Slice two pieces of sourdough and, to up the creaminess, spread a layer of cream cheese on both slices. This adds a rich and smooth texture that complements the other ingredients.

Tip: Toasting the sourdough on a skillet with a little butter or olive oil gives the bread a golden, crispy exterior, which creates the perfect contrast to the creamy fillings.

Step 3: Cooking the Eggs and Bacon

For this sandwich, I like to keep the egg simple—scrambled or over-easy, whatever you prefer. If you’re scrambling, make sure to cook them low and slow so they stay creamy and soft. Over-easy works great too if you love that runny yolk!
The bacon should be cooked until crisp to provide that crunch factor. Feel free to use regular bacon or go for something a bit more indulgent, like thick-cut bacon, for even more flavor.

Step 4: Assemble the Sandwich

Once your bread is golden and toasted, it’s time to assemble. Start by layering on your crispy bacon, then your eggs, followed by a slice of cheddar cheese for that classic savory breakfast vibe. The warmth of the eggs and bacon will gently melt the cheese, making it ooze into the sandwich.
Now comes the special touch—spoon a generous layer of your homemade strawberry jam on top of the cheese, then place the other slice of sourdough, cream cheese side down, to close the sandwich. The jam adds a sweet pop that ties everything together, while the cream cheese gives every bite a velvety finish.

Tips & Tricks for the Best Morning Jam Breakfast Sandwich

  • Make the Jam in Advance: This is a perfect make-ahead component. Prepare the strawberry jam the night before and store it in the fridge. In the morning, it’ll be ready to go, and you’ll save time on busy mornings.

  • Customize Your Fillings: Don’t stop at bacon, egg, and cheese—add avocado for extra creaminess, or swap out cheddar for gouda or brie for a more decadent flavor profile.

  • Crisping the Bread: For added crunch, you can press the sandwich with a spatula while frying on the skillet, similar to a grilled cheese. This ensures everything is pressed together, and the outside gets that irresistible crispiness.

Yield: 2
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Additional Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 slices bread, I used a Vermont Cheddar artisan loaf from a local bakery for extra cheddar love
  • Cheddar cheese (I used sliced white cheddar and shredded yellow cheddar)
  • 1/2-3/4 cup chopped cooked broccoli
  • 2 tbsps unsalted butter, room temp
  • 1 tbsp chopped chive
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix the chives and a pinch of salt into the softened butter.
  2. On one slice of bread, layer white cheddar, broccoli, and shredded yellow cheddar, then top with the second slice of bread. Spread about 1/2 tablespoon of the chive butter on the outside of the sandwich.
  3. Preheat a griddle or skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwich, buttered side down, on the griddle. Use parchment paper and a steak weight (or a spatula) to press the sandwich down as it cooks. Cook for 2-3 minutes, until the bottom is golden brown.
  4. Carefully spread more chive butter on the top slice of bread before flipping the sandwich. Grill the other side for another 2-3 minutes, until crispy and golden. Once done, top with extra chives if desired. Let the sandwich cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
